Armeria flower: planting and care in the open ground, growing from seeds
Armeria (Armeria) belongs to the genus of herbaceous flowering perennials of the family piggy. This genus unites approximately 90 species of various plants. According to one version, the name of this flower comes from 2 Celtic words such as: “ar” - “near, nearby” and “mor” - “sea”. So, in support of this version, a species was found that grows in Armeria, while it prefers to grow in coastal dunes. There is also a version that the name of the armeria comes from the word "armoires", that is how the clove is bearded in the Old French language, and several types of armeria are similar to it. Under natural conditions, such a plant can be found in the Mediterranean, America, Eastern Europe, Mongolia, as well as in Siberia.
The height of this flower varies from 15 to 60 centimeters. He has a short rod rhizome. A large number of sedentary whole-leaf sheets having a linear lanceolate shape are assembled in a basal rosette. At the same time, they form pillows (dense curtains). A straight stem can be pubescent or be smooth. Small flowers are part of capitate inflorescences, while they can be painted in pink, white or purple. Single seed fruit. Flowering lasts from late spring to late summer. The most popular species is the seaside armeria (Armeria maritima). This species of armeria is grown in the same way as all other species, but it should be noted that it prefers to grow in relative proximity to water bodies.

Growing armeria from seeds
You can grow a plant from seeds using a non-seedling method, as well as through seedlings. In open soil, sowing of seeds is carried out at the end of the autumn period, so in winter they will undergo natural stratification. You can also sow in the spring in the early days of March. In greenhouses for seedlings, sowing is carried out in the last days of February or the first - in March. Also, the propagation of this flower can occur and self-seeding. When sowing seeds in open soil, as well as in a greenhouse, you need to consider that they should not be buried too much. So, it is recommended to sprinkle the seeds with a layer of soil of 5 mm. Such seeds have a high percentage of germination.
In order for the seedlings to be friendly, it is recommended for 7 days to put the seeds on the shelf of the refrigerator, and then immediately immerse them in lukewarm water and pull out after 6-8 hours. Crops must be transferred to a well-lit and warm place. After 2 real leaves appear at the seedlings, they are dived into greenhouses for growing. They should stay there until they get stronger.
Armeria planting in open ground
What time to land
After the leaflets of the plants in the greenhouse become sufficiently strong, they can be transplanted into the open ground, but only if the frosts do not return exactly. For such a plant, it is recommended to select the most sunny and well-warmed area. Suitable soil should be slightly moist and slightly acidic, so rocky or sandy soil is excellent. Armeria grows poorly in the soil, where there is a lot of lime, so you need to fix this before planting. To do this, it is recommended to add ammonium nitrate to the soil or pour it with a solution of acetic acid.
How to plant armeria
Soil preparation should be done half a month before disembarkation. To do this, it must be thoroughly loosened and organic fertilizers added to it. In the case of growing armeria as a single plant, it must be planted in pre-prepared holes, while the distance between the bushes should be from 30 to 40 centimeters, and also at about the same distance they should be from other plants. Armeria is set so that its leaf plates are not immersed in the soil, while the root neck should not be too deep. The required amount of soil is poured into the wells, after which it is tamped, and then irrigated. In the event that it is supposed to grow armeria with a continuous carpet, a distance of more than 15–20 centimeters should not be made between plants. Instead of holes, it is better to make not very deep trenches. After planting, the first weeks of 3 should be watered frequently enough, however, the bushes need to be watered only after the soil surface dries slightly. Flowering of plants grown from seeds begins only from the second year of life. From seeds of armeria, seaside should be grown in the same way.
Caring for such a flower is very simple. Before flowering, full mineral fertilizer is recommended in the soil. After that, in the same way feed the plant another 1 or 2 times. Fading flowers must be cut off in a timely manner, and also those peduncles that will no longer appear will need to be removed. As a result of this, the saved forces of the flower will go to the appearance of new buds. In the dry summer period, watering should be regular, but waterlogging should not be done. After the armeria is 5 years old, you need to dig a bush and divide it into parts, and then plant it. And then this procedure should be performed 1 time in 2 or 3 years, otherwise the flower will grow.
Diseases and pests
The plant is highly resistant to various diseases and harmful insects. However, if the acidity of the soil is less than necessary, then armeria may begin to have problems with spotting or aphids. As a fight against such misfortunes, radical pruning of stems is used.
Armeria after flowering
In the event that armeria is grown on your garden site, then collecting its seeds is not particularly necessary, since it reproduces excellently by self-sowing. And you should not forget that the bushes will need to be regularly planted, while dividing them into dividers, and the sowing plants will multiply with their seeds, so you definitely have enough planting material. In the same case, if you want to share armeria with someone, it is better to give part of the shares or cut off a few cuttings. However, if you really need seeds, then the inflorescence, which will begin to fade, will need to be tied with a piece of gauze, which will prevent seeds from falling onto the soil surface. Fully dried inflorescence must be carefully trimmed. Seeds need to be shaken out on a leaf. After that, they are cleaned of plant debris. When the seeds are dry, they must be sprinkled in a bag of paper.
Such a plant is highly resistant to frost, and therefore they should not be covered for the winter, especially if the winter periods in this area are sufficiently snowy. However, soddy armeria needs compulsory shelter. You can cover the bushes with spruce branches, dry peat, as well as non-woven material. If a little snowy winter is forecasted, then it is better to cover the armeria.
The main varieties and species with photos and names
The most popular among gardeners are approximately 10 species of armeria. They are grown in rabatki, rocky gardens, in group plantings, rock gardens and as colored borders.
Armeria alpina (Armeria alpina)
Such a perennial forms dense pillows, which in height can reach 15 centimeters, and in diameter - no more than 30 centimeters. Most linear lanceolate leaf blades are able to survive during wintering. The capitate axillary inflorescences in diameter reach 30 mm; the color of the flowers is pale pink. Peduncle height about 30 centimeters. Flowering lasts about 3-4 weeks and begins in June. The homeland of this type of armeria is the highlands of Portugal, as well as Spain. The height of this perennial plant can reach 15 centimeters. Narrow leaf plates have a linear shape, they are part of the basal rosette, which in diameter can reach about 20 centimeters. Flowers are collected in inflorescences of capitate form, they can have pink or red color. Inflorescences have a frame, which is a webbed bracts. Peduncles height about 6 centimeters. This species is distinguished by the abundance of its flowering, so very often there are so many flowers and inflorescences that they completely cover the leaf plates and stems of the bush. Flowering begins in July and can last 40-50 days. This type of armeria is extremely negative for stagnation of water in the root system.
